So I came into the group first as a songwriter. Then during the recording of the I&P album they were asking me to play bass on the songs I wrote because their existing bass player (Gary Lovetro) was taking too long to learn them. It was actually Ed King that played the bass part on Incense for that very same reason. Also during those sessions I was asked to join the band as a full time member. Gary was still playing bass then so I would play various instruments like acoustic guitar, Mini Mando, several percussion instruments and background harmonies. Some of the time we both played bass.
Pretty soon the band voted Gary off the Island and by the beginning of 1968 I was the only bass player but Ed still played a bunch of bass in the studio. Previous Message
I recently rewatched your live performance of Incense and Peppermints from 1967 on some tv show and I noticed you were playing an acoustic guitar instead of a bass guitar. I was wondering why you was and who was the guy playing bass in that video.
