"Girl from Impanema" is from Brazil....not American either. I think it was just that the "old Guard" was still in place and the music revolution caught them all off guard....so to speak.
Plus I think the record companies had a huge influence on who was picked. The Grammy's have been restructured since then and they really emphasize that you vote for quality and content over popularity.

For George who I know is on the Grammy committee....music historians have noted how much the Beatles were robbed of certainly deserved Grammys.Instead of "I Want to Hold Your Hand" for Record of the Year,they chose "Girl from Impanema" while MEET THE BEATLES wasn't even nominated for Album of the Year and in '66 REVOLVER lost in that category to Sinatra.My uncle once proposed zones of the reason may have been because they weren't American.Do you think there's been a bit of socio politics involved in committee selections?
