RIP Jimmy Pitman
Very sad news indeed. Jimmy Pitman was a super talent but even more he was a very down to earth no bs kinda guy. He joined Strawberry Alarm Clock right after Randy Seol and I left in late 1968. He brought with him an arsenal of musicianship, songwriting and the lead vocals the band needed.
His style fit right in. He had the rock and blues chops that were core to the sensibilities of Ed King and Lee Freeman. Both musically and vocally. Sadly, now all three are gone.
Along with Jimmy, came Gene Gunnels’ return to SAC after his premature departure at the completion of his amazing drum track on Incense and Peppermints.
The other perfectly melded component was the songwriting marriage of Jimmy and Mark Stephen Weitz. Theirs was a solid approach to the creative rock SAC was originally known for.
The album they all created was Good Morning Starshine. If it hadn’t been overshadowed by the Oliver version it could’ve marked a triumphant return to the charts.
RIP JIMMY
