I had many other influences that manifested themselves in other aspects of my music....such as my bass playing. There I was attracted to the more aggressive and bombastic stylings of John Entwistle and bands like the Yardbyrds. I also had melodic leanings such as McCartney and Voorman. But, my song writing was more on the softer side.
As I aged I started to write songs based on riffs...those usually came from a bass part. Even now I go back and forth with my writing and playing.
On the subject of crackly...I used to love listening to old 78 rpm glass records. You really had to focus your listening to pick up on the details and lyrics....A major influence for me there was Hoagy Carmichael...I even got to meet him once...his advice was just write a Stardust or Georgia!
Ed King basically did that with Sweet Home Alabama...mailbox $$$

: A new EP on vinyl? awesome!! I absolutely
: can't wait! and yeah, digital music does
: tend to reveal the nuances of a song but
: there's something about the vinyl sound that
: is just so... groovy. I actually like buying
: semi-decent second hand records because the
: pops and crackly sounds bring a whole new
: context to a song I think; it gives it a bit
: of history.
: I never would have guessed Season of the
: Witch inspired that song, wow! I would have
: guessed that of all of Donovan's discography
: it would have been Three King Fishers that
: would have served as the chief inspiration.
: That's really cool!
: And I will definitely check that CD out.
: Thanks for being great B)

: Hi Dalida!
: Welcome to the SAC Message Board! aka
: SACLAND...
:
: Funny that you mentioned the vinyls...we are
: in the process of recording a new EP to be
: released on VINYL! Although I must admit
: that when I first heard CD's and then
: DIGITAL recording of our old stuff and other
: stuff that was originally recorded on vinyl
: I heard thing that I never knew were
: there....Or in the case of our own stuff,
: things that I forgot were there. One such
: example is the fuzz bass part I played on
: Sitting On A Star. It was mixed so low that
: with the warmth of vinyl it became part of a
: collage. Which of course is the beauty of
: vinyl...
: I also loved Donovan. His Season Of The
: Witch inspired our Rainy Day Mushroom
: Pillow. Orange Skies by LOVE was another
: influence.
: I was attracted to melancholia as well. I go
: for the opposite as well.
: We are gearing up to do some live shows
: which will mix old and new songs. We
: released a CD in 2012 called Wake Up Where
: You Are that also mixes old with new.
:
: Anyway, thanks for listening...It means a
: lot to us!

: Hey SAC! I'm Dalida, I'm 17 & I
: discovered
: your music a few months ago and have just
: found this little forum. I gotta say... you
: guys are one of my favorites already, right
: up there with Donovan. Honestly, there are
: no words to describe how much I love the
: Black Butters, Strawberries Mean Love, Rainy
: Day Mushroom Pillow, Eulogy, and ESPECIALLY
: Shallow Impressions (to name a few). I love
: listening to your albums while painting or
: doing homework or particularly when driving
: to a setting sun on the freeway.
: It's difficult to articulate exactly how
: enamored I am. Thank you so, so much for
: your work and creativity. There is nothing
: more therapeutic to me than curling up in
: bed with my phone and earbuds and
: disappearing into the burgundy skies of
: Pretty Song from Psych-out or the
: melancholic sweetness of Wooden Woman.
: According to iTunes (I promise I'm trying to
: find vinyl copies that won't break my bank
: to listen to it the "proper way")
: I've listened to Sitting on a Star 215 times
: alone, which I think says enough, haha. I
: have an affinity for your sound; there's
: nothing else quite like it. It tops The
: Beatles by miles, in my opinion.
: I happen to be an hour away from LA and see
: you all tend to perform there - anything
: coming up? I'd love to hear my favorite
: songs live!!
