We did record it in demo mode, as we did all the songs. Our original plan was to embark on a recording project by revisiting and recording some of the old material "just to see if we could work together" and also to see what we sound like this many years later. Like, do we still sound like the SAC?
We recorded about a dozen or so of the old songs as demos. Not really intending to release them as or on an album. Our real intention was to write and record new songs. We just wanted to get back to our roots a bit, establish a method and move on from there.
Incense is a difficult act to follow. There are so many serendipitous reasons for that original track coming together as it did, as well as a healthy amount of disdain over the mishandled writer's credits and the possibility of us adding more revenue to that handbag. I think the track was doomed from the get go. We did have a nice arrangement for it, but the original version is is what it is, because it is what it is. So we let that be.
Another reason for the older songs inclusion on this album is that Steve bartek got too busy with his film scoring and working with some other acts in production that he had to bow out of the band as an active member. This curtailed our writing and recording of new material in his studio. Not for good, but our carte blanche had reached it's end.
Steve did continue on with the production and final mixes of all the songs. We are forever indebted to him for all he did for us.
When we did start finishing up the demos of the old songs there were a couple we didn't use. Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow, World's on Fire and Incense.
And finally, yes, we didn't want the focus to be on a re-recorded version of I & P.
The arrangements on the revived material stemmed from the way we had always wanted them to be. You see, under the guise of the old producers we had to trim it all down to 2 or 3 minutes per song...except World's on Fire...8 min. Now we had the luxury to take our own songs and open them up....and explore within.
And as I said, it was for our own amusement and experimentation, not intended for an album per se.
Just taking the liberties of poetic our license!
