The problem with Incense came after Thee Sixpence recorded the basic track written by Mark Weitz with a bridge by Ed King as an instrumental. The producer, Frank Slay thought the song should have lyrics and suggested Carter write them as he already had the title of Incense and Peppermints floating around.
When Carter finished the rest of the body of the song he brought it to the band. More confusion ensued when the producer had Greg Munford sing the track, a friend and stable mate, but not a member of the band.
When copyright time came Slay told the manager, Bill Holmes to choose whose names would be given writer's credit. Holmes came back with basically everyone in the band plus his own name. Slay refused to credit so many and just sent the form in with two names, Carter, and his songwriting partner Tim Gilbert. The crazy thing there is that Gilbert never wrote as much as a comma!
The travesty here is that Mark wrote most of the music and brought Ed in for the bridge and neither received any credit for writing a #1 song. A "Flower Power" anthem. A cornerstone of the "Summer of Love". Couple all this with the revenue that song has generated and you have what should be called CRIMINAL!
