....in those days....when a president could get away with fooling around on the side and even have press help with the cover up...press folk were in many cases hired by the individual acts.
they were the publicists.
we had a guy named stan zipperman. he wrote concert and album reviews about us....always favorable....and he was a very likable guy too....but, he was on the payroll!
then along comes rolling stone magazine with gritty reviews....they probably couldn't be bought.
the la times and herald examiner pretty much told it like it was but if a certain venue's reputation for having the best of the best was at stake they would tread lightly...power bartering
we paid little attention to what was going on around us. more or less busy going about our business...once i read some sort of review about our third album, seashell, saying we had abandoned whatever audience we had left. we all knew that but it wasn't by [our] choice.
