It is always tempting to be over indulgent in the studio. Mainly to listen back to it when you're done jacking around. To me, it's an "in-joke" that you let out into the public for their own interpretations. SAC took whatever liberties we could, to be sure.
Keep in mind that we were surrounded by businessmen who kept us in line and made sure we got the job at hand done. On the other hand, we did get frivolous on several occasions;

curse of the witches
black butter
nightmare of percussion

If we had been left to our own devices we would have gotten much further out on that proverbial limb.

I personally felt that Andy Warhol's universe was pretentious.
Including the Velvet Underground. Too drug oriented for me.
I loved Zappa's universe.
There wasn't much to grasp philosophically speaking, at least not anything new.
