I just wanted to join this discussion as a Holmes fan (last week I went to The Sherlock Holmes Museum). Jeremy did very well to avoid the BBC Sherlock Holmes that he was linked with - Gill is being very kind. It was awful, and not just because the actor they cast, Richard Roxbourgh, did not have the charisma for the part. They took a lot of liberties with the plot, which added nothing, and left me sitting in front of the TV, my print copy of The Hound of the Baskervilles on my lap, shouting at the screen whenever they made another stupid change.
I would like to see Jeremy cast as Sherlock, but I am very relieved that it wasn't with that script.
I think I enjoyed the Downey Jr Sherlock Holmes film more than Gill did - but I don't think it was a Sherlock Holmes film either. I also think I am more inclined to think kindly of the BBC Sherlock - although I had doubts before I watched - but the other episodes weren't as strong as the first one with Phil Davis.
Sorry this is a little bit Jeremy tangential, but I just wanted to butt in with how bad the version he escaped was. My memory might be playing tricks, but I think they might even have changed whodunnit (edit - I just checked on wikipedia and my memory is deceiving me, but they did reprieve a character who dies in the novel).
