Yes, I'd characterize the reviews as being "mixed" so far. 
Some of the reviewers appear to be looking solely for big action blockbusters or edgy, groundbreaking films like last year's Birdman. And "period film" seems to have become a dirty word. 
None of the less-than-wonderful reviews I've seen have faulted the acting, however. 
Hoping for at least a limited, art-house release here in the US.
