This is an excerpt from an interview with Michael Caine and, although we would like to see JN in more films, plays, etc, I think he has become a character actor, and is happy with this type of career. Also think that there are several articles from his early career (about the time of TWB) in which he is quoted as wanting a career similar to Nigel Hawthorne and Peter Postelwaite)....

Somehow I don't think JN would like to have paparazzi following him about wherever he goes.

ESQ: You went from leading man to character actor.
MC: The phrase I use: “I no longer get the girl, but I get the part.” I’ve been happy ever since. I don’t have to work for money. I just work when I feel like it. I was nominated for a couple of Academy Awards, and won one, and got a Bafta. I got a Hollywood whatever it is [Variety Club Award]. I’m happy.
