Just travelling back to Malaga atm. Fuckin weird place right enough! When I turned up late on Friday absolutely everybody seemed to be steaming - defo living up to the ‘more pubs per square mile..’ thing.
Walked up rock into the nature reserve - all the tours were in people carriers and I’m on my own. Did all the open tunnels I think…got tunnelled out of my mind tbh. St Michael’s cave defo the best bit. Would love to see a concert in there.

There’s a weird kind of a southern squaddie town feel to the main part of town…with Spanish and Moroccan vibes also obv. Elements defo a bit bleak (prob not helped by the weather) esp the walk round the other side to Catalan Bay. Like walking through an especially shitey part of Maryhill.

In conclusion: ticked that one off. Don’t think I would go back unless my mum’s feeling nostalgic and fancies going.

Been a couple of times, meh.

Cadiz was a much more handsome city but we spent a day in Gibraltar last year.

Last October, on a beautiful day, we walked from the town to just about as far up as you can get.

Views were tremendous. If I remember correctly it was about 25000 steps up, pottering about and back. Thighs ached for a day after.

Best bit St Michaels caves - spectacular caverns, stalactites, rock formations, caves big enough to have a theatre inside!

We felt the views and St Michael's alone were worth the walk.

I regularly stay nearby with freinds. It's ok for a day like, but I wouldn't do a whole weekend.

My advice?

Go to Jerez, Cadiz or Ronda instead.

If you insist on going to Gib, as someone else mentioned, go for a day.

Edit: just be careful with the weather if you're going the top of the rock. My app says cloudy Saturday and Sunday, which can often mean the top is enveloped. You also occasionally get the levante in this time of year which will involve low lying cloud early morning until the sun burns it away.

Worked there or 8 years, leaving in 2014, so unless there have been some improvements I would suggest you could do everything you wanted to in a full day rather than waste a weekend there.

Lived in Los Alamos for a bit in the '90s and would regularly cross into Gib from La Linea*. Odd place. Double decker buses and a medina like Marrakesh. The pound where they keep the seized cars and boats (from smuggling) has vehicles going back years.

*Had a walk around La Linea once with the pram looking for somewhere to live. Like Marsh Lane in Bootle but hot.

It's you are thinking of going to the top of the rock skip the queues at the foot of the cable car and grab one of the many tours offering to take you up by road instead....far more thrilling and a good way to see all the rock offers.

Loved it when going in on ship, those days great duty free. The ceremony of the keys if it still happens was real throwback to colonial days (not that I am a flag shagger)

The graveyard from Trafalgar is there and the gun ports overlooking Spain were a good tourist thing to do.

And it was a great place to get pissed
