Still can’t get my head around us paying Burnley up front pending an appeal. Make it make sense! They’ve fucked up letting Burnley sue us. Hoping it brings the whole thing crashing down

Exactly. Early 60’s Everton had “loans” from John Moores allowing them to buy top players like Tony Kay. Won the first division league championship in 62-63. This earned them the nicknames “mersey millionaires” and “the Bank of England club”.

However, this rattled a few feathers. Jimmy Greaves states in his book that he hated Everton for “buying” the league championship. He felt that his Spurs Team who finished second would have won if it wasn’t for Everton’s sudden new found overwhelming spending power. He stated that Everton were the first club to be able to do this and started the modern trend of clubs being able to outspend others to achieve success, instead of relying on scouting, producing players from youth and coaching.

EFC were called the cheque book champions by the press and rival clubs. However Greaves did state that EFC hadn’t just bought the championship with money, but by cleverly building a balanced effective team which earned them the nickname “the school of science”.

Other clubs had previously spent large amounts on single players but not built squads as Everton did. He did include that Everton team in his book about the 10 greatest football teams.

I remember reading a series of interviews with Jim Greenwood (think that was his name) the club secretary from the 70/80s, in the Echo.
He spoke about how we considered selling Bellfield for about £100,00 around about 1980.
No idea where we would have trained.
We where skint then as well!!!

Gordon Lee tried to sign Ian Rush from Chester for £300,000 in 1980 but the board wouldn't give him the money, so he went for the cheaper option of £120,000 for Graeme Sharp from Dumbarton.

Now we all loved Sharpy, but fucking hell, the pain that could've saved us from....

I think we were in the top four for spending all through the 80s and top 2 with Liverpool from around 87 onwards. Bizarrely our demise was from 1992 onwards when the new league we helped create came in.

Correct

His comments after he left mean he can do one forever. Cheeky twat. Senegal benchwarmer anyway.

We've brought back far worse than him!! 😂
