How have your hopes and dreams fro Everton diminished over the years?

Back in the 80s I genuinely thought we were gonna go on to dominate the game in the way that lot had and end up eventually matching them for League titles and European cups.

By the mid 90s I still believed we were just in a blip and we would soon return to our rightful place at the top, inevitably adding at least one Champions League to the cabinet.

By the mid 2000s I thought Moyes was leading a revival that would see Everton rejoin the big 5, and perhaps repeat some of the modest success of the 80s

By the 2010s it was I'd like to at least see us do a Leicester and get one more title and a CL run in before I die.

By the 2020s it was one more trophy, any trophy, in my lifetime, will do.

By 2026 I think just witnessing one more season playing decent football and a derby win might be all I'm gonna get.

A very low bar for me, nowadays.
Dad was at Oldham the last time we were promoted in the 50s.
In his later years, I really didn’t want him to see us relegated.
He passed 4 1/2 years ago, so we ‘achieved’ that.
I’m 56, and already hoping I never see us relegated.

Christ, I’ve just depressed myself.

It's not Everton as such, it's my love for so called 'elite' football in general that has diminished.

It was once a very open competition, at both ends of the table. The league winners would sometimes come from seemingly nowhere, 'big' teams would sometimes go down, and the league cup and of course the FA Cup in particular were always full of genuine surprises right through to the final itself.

Now it's just predictable, manufactured, orchestrated shite.

This, absolutely.

No point in following something that is so skewed in favour of a few elite clubs. Without real competition and a sense that it's not just a foregone conclusion, it all becomes meaningless. I actually find the football sterile as well.

I'm happy to follow Chester in the National League North. Affordable ticket prices, Saturday 3pm, Tuesday 7:45pm KOs, so you can plan a few away days as well without worrying about a change to a Monday night or whenever, enjoying a pie and a pint without getting ripped off and knowing that when you talk about the game later, or read people's comments about it, everyone will have actually been to the game, not been told what happened by biased, clueless media "experts" who peddle the accepted narrative. It reminds me of the essence of top flight football when I first used to go in the late 70s, albeit on a more modest scale.

I think my affection for Everton is based on something that died a long time ago. I still shouted out when Tarks got that late equaliser, mind.

Same, albeit with a, currently second to fucking bottom, Nantwich Town slant. A home FA Trophy tie with high flying Wellingborough Town the weekend after next will be a tremendous afternoon.

I had a few Chester players sat behind and next to me during the recent friendly, a thoroughly decent and talkative bunch I thought.

can basically divide it between pre and post rooney. pre rooney I was always optimistic that we were only a good manager and one incredible player away from doing something, no matter how bad we were at times. since he left I’ve basically accepted we are mid table fodder no matter how good bad it gets I can’t get carried away.

During the Weerrrrrld Cup, I caught a bit of a group game involving Canada and heard the commentator say ‘Steve Oooo-stackio’.

‘Why haven’t we got a player called Steve Oooo-stackio,’ I enquired of the nearest Swansea fan.

Well, now we have.

As Gabrielle, amongst others, has mentioned, dreams can come true.

No, its been pretty consistently to just be a bit better and a bit more 'go for it' when the chances arise.

Probably about 10 matches in my 35 years following us if that had been applied, the whole thing would feel totally different.
