In 2014 they upgraded the Wigan and Manchester to Lime Street railway lines by expanding bridges for elecy overheads and adding in extra platforms and lines at Roby and Huyton which actually seems to have worked really well and allows quicker trains to pass and fewer blocked lines etc plus there are more platforms at Huyton station.
So an idiot asks couldn't they do that around Sandhills and even further afield could we not have done that around the country for HS2 instead?

Been said many times before but the ground needs a new station. Sandhills won’t suffice.

Needs to be opposite the Tobacco warehouse on Great Howard Street, massive area there to build a station.

Yeah that’ll do. Not much is said about it now because football fans get treated like dirt generally. Wait until concerts are taking place there and people paying £100+ a ticket start complaining.

Think I saw a report that we've applied to planning to increase the number snd duration of non sporting events. It's a challenge to the original terms of the planning application. They must know they can get events.

Richard Kemp getting slated for making a comment comparing the Sandhills match day setup to that of Auschwitz. No need for that of course, but reading between the lines Bobby Chariot and pals have been laughing joking and treating the whole transport situation at the Stadium with complete contempt from day 1. Theyve had years to come up with solutions and have completely failed miserably
Chariot was just on the news talking about the comments, they are bad and shouldn't have been said . But if only someone had told Chariot that a 52 thousand seat stadium was being built he could have done something about it as he only had 5 years to sort it

He's actually said in a meeting (maybe on the radio can't remember )they couldn't commit in case it didn't get built because of the state of the clubs finances.
A)he should never have said that - pure kopite.
B) plans should have been on place ready to put into action. They clearly haven't hence the cattle pens without a roof
I would be ok with sandhills if there was cover once you get off the road. In fact given the bridge restricting height anyway some cover on the road itself could be added as well
Ideally a station nearer the ground would be ideal but as a minimum some shelter should be provided

"Former Lord Mayor of Liverpool refuses to apologise after comparing Sandhills to Auschwitz Metro Mayor and Liverpool Council chief call for two senior Liberal Democrats to be suspended for their comments at a planning meeting
A former Lord Mayor of Liverpool has refused to apologise after comparing the matchday queuing system at a city train station to a concentration camp. Cllr Richard Kemp has refused to back down amid condemnation of his remarks around Sandhills station and Auschwitz.
During a discussion on the expansion of a queuing area at the station for fans travelling to and from Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium on matchdays, the veteran Liberal Democrat councillor said the current arrangement risked treating fans “like cattle.” He added how the lanes were “like the greeting area for Auschwitz"
He now faces calls to be suspended alongside Liberal Democrat colleague Cllr Pat Moloney who said the corralling zones and sterile areas proposed for staff and fans was “like something out of a horrific death camp in Nazi Germany.” Cllr Kemp told the ECHO he stood by his assessment while Cllr Moloney said he would apologise if he had caused offence.
During a debate in yesterday’s Liverpool Council planning committee, which would have led to an extension of the existing queuing area, Cllr Kemp was critical of the time it had taken for improvements to be made at Sandhills. He said: “It’s now nine years since the passenger transport authority knew there was going to be a new stadium.
“Last year you introduced something which the Mayor (Steve Rotheram) announced as pens, which to me were like the greeting area for Auschwitz. Absolutely disgraceful.”
Cllr Moloney asked Merseyrail representatives: “Why didn’t you get this right the first time, because this is a major change?” He added: “The language is appalling and dehumanising; a corralling area, a sterile zone, this is human beings we’re talking about here.
“This is like something out of a horrific death camp in Nazi Germany. Really, this just amazes me.”
The comments were condemned by Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram and Cllr Liam Robinson, leader of the Labour group and city council. They have written to Sir Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, calling for both councillors to be suspended pending investigation"
In their letter, the two men said: “We respectfully ask: what is going on here?” They added: “You have visited Auschwitz yourself and will know better than most why comparisons of this kind are so offensive and ill-judged.
“We have attached the planning drawings relating to the application. We will leave it to you to form your own judgement on whether such a comparison is remotely appropriate.
“Following Councillor Moloney’s reported remarks, we have been contacted by members of the Jewish community who expressed deep upset at the language that had been used. News that a second Liberal Democrat member of the same planning committee appears to have drawn a similar comparison will only deepen that distress" The Labour leaders said they were of the view “this kind of hyperbole has no place in public discourse.” The letter added: “The men, women and children who perished at Auschwitz were victims of one of the worst crimes in human history.
“There is no meaningful comparison between their suffering and football supporters travelling home from a match. The fact that two members of the same planning committee appear to have made such remarks during the same discussion raises concerns that go beyond an isolated lapse of judgement by a single individual.”
Cllr Kemp took a combative stance in his response to the letter and took aim at the Labour figures. He said: “It’s simple, Steve Rotheram and Liam Robinson are covering up their own incompetence. They’ve had eight years to provide safe conditions for fans to get to and from the station and they have failed totally to do that not only at Sandhills but all the other arrangements; parking, taxis, disabled people being able to get near the gates.
“There’s a whole raft of problems they were preparing for and they have failed to do this.” Cllr Kemp added how it was now likely the proposed changes to Sandhills would now be in place for Everton’s third season at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Asked if he would retract his comment about Auschwitz or apologise, the former Lord Mayor said: “The way they (Merseyrail officials) are talking about Evertonians and fans is absolutely disgraceful and therefore the description I made is apt. They (Mr Rotheram and Cllr Robinson) are trying to cover their own incompetence.”
Asked by the ECHO for his response, Cllr Moloney said: “If you remember the discussion, Richard Kemp talked in similar terms and I was following on from that and I stand by that. The language used was about corralling, the whole concept seemed to be humanising.
“I’m surprised they haven’t apologised for the way they talked about people. I’m disappointed they haven’t taken the point on board.
“I would say perhaps if I’ve gone too far and if I’ve offended anyone I apologise for that but the language and the attitude of it, I stand by that.”

A couple of easy things they could do to releive some of these and won't require huge spends of money or panning permission.
- Remove some of the ridiculous parking restrictions around the ground in what is a predominantly industrial area anyway....that way a lot of peoplewho used to drive to the game can go back to it.
- Make sure EVERY train that passes through Sandhills for that 2 hours period after the final whistle is as long as the current infrastructure will allow, no more 4 carriages and I'm pretty sure Merseyrail trains used to have 10 and 12 carriages back in the day.
PS the staff at Sandhills are fantastic, they should all be given public recognition for their work, because all they seem to keep getting told is what a shitshow the place is.

the parking is nuts.
every ground ever in the history of the sport has had industrial / commercial premises nearby that have been allowed to use carparks at the weekend.
seems nuts they are preventing local businesses making a few quid.
the sandhills industrial estate on the east side of the railway line is riddled with places that could do parking and be integrated into the transport plan.

My thinking is that the club are actively preventing this (as they seem to be with some of the proposed bars too) in order to preserve their ability to make more money out of us later down the line when they open their own parking up.

I walk the match from town so have only seen the traffic after and it looks mad. Wouldn’t more cars add to this? Would people be prepared to wait longer? Just asking like as when I have driven, I park in town and walk there. Totally understand about those who can’t walk so just intrigued as to how allowing more parking would improve the situation? It would just ease the Sandhills sketch?

If they allowed more parking around the ground I dont think they'd have to close as manyroads thus eleveating some of the traffic problesm caused by there only being one road in and one road out .
to be fair we walk the weekend games but have to drive for the night games

It's just Sandhills Lane, Boundary Street and Regent Road isn't it?

There's a fair few side streets and back lanes down there that I've seen closed off too. The side street closures seem to extend a long way up Regent Road as well, way beyond where the coaches park.
Re: Sandhills update
Posted by Heisenberg Blue on August 26, 2026, 12:11 pm, in reply to "Re: Sandhills update"
That's mainly because Regent Road is closed isn't it and you can't have cars driving on to it. There's still a few places down by the Costco end doing parking. Bankhall Lane is shut for the same reason.

I've not been south of the ground on matchdays and I usually get the train in to/from Sandhills when I've travelled so most of my experience is from that section.
But when I went the Rugby Union game I parked way up the far end away from any restrictions and used my scooter to get down to the ground. Both before and after the match there seemed to be every sidestreet north up to Bankfield Street closed off.....there could have been more even further than that, but I headed up Bankfield street so did'nt see further.

Posted by Spart on August 26, 2026, 12:07 pm, in reply to "Re: Sandhills update"
I have to admit the closing of Regent Road right infront of the dock wall does make me feel a lot safer than I ever used to trying to cross County Road after a match. But closing all the side streets and large sections elsewhere is just overkill.....I bet it also pisses local residents off way more than a few lids parking outside their house once a fortnight too.

Is it any worse than post match traffic was at Goodison?
I accept that there will now be bottlenecks near to town because the ground is nearer, but were the same bottlenecks just on Walton Lane/County Road/Queens Drive beforehand anyway and people coped with them.
I'd also reckon the dual carriageway on Derby Road heading directly north away from town would disperse traffic way quicker than the old routes out along Walton Hall Avenue as there's less traffic lights and less other traffic of a weekend on that route.
