1. We’re not good enough we need a new manager
2. Great, we have a new manager, need to
Give him time / 2 or 3 seasons to sort things out and rebuild.
3. A year later when we’re not top 4. “This manager is shite, we need a new manager”.
4. See 1.

We’re currently in the early stages of 3 I see, from one or two comments on here.

I don’t personally have a problem with identifying a season as a “rebuild” season. But if that’s the mindset, why do we expect way more? And if that’s the mindset, why doesn’t Moyes try a few different things? Players? Formation? Two strikers? Young lads?

We’re either rebuilding or not…

It's all a bit congested though at present isn't it?

We're as close to 6th as we are the drop zone. Not to say we should be complacent. Carry on as we are and the gap to the European places grows but the relegation zone will be as close. A decent run and we'll be laughing at the bedwetting done in October and early November. We'll have a better idea where we are* by the Forest game I reckon.

*as well as the teams currently a point or two either side of us.

I think your whole argument falls down with point 3.....at no point in the last 5 or 6 years of shyte has anyone expected Everton to be top 4.

We all know what we are at and some of us recognise that top 4 might be a place nobe of can ever expect Everton to be in again.

What we do have a right to expect though is:

Signs of progress from where we are
A decent cup run
To be reasonably entertained by what we see in the pitch.

Every single one of the managers that we ran out of patience with in these years we did so because they failed to deliver on ANY of these points.

It's the fact that clubs, I see as similar to us, Newcastle and villa, got a manager in and have gone on to be in and around the champions league places near enough straight away.

Bit of luck and having a plan can work wonders. It's frustrating that it hasn't happened to us, and people are realising now we have players like Jack Grealish and a new ground we have the ability to do it quickly as well.

Having said all of the above, I still think there's a chance he can get us into Europe this season

Not quite right, but should be pointed out he then won 12 and drew 2 of his last 18 games. 4 losses coming against chelsea, city and spurs away and the shite at home.

After that impressive turnaround he qualified for the champions league the following season and they haven't looked back.

Emery did similar turning villa from relegation candidates to champions league qualifiers in 18 months.

and Villa had a decent team that Dean smith left them they were only near relegation places because slippy is utter shit at management.

We have been near the bottom having spent next to nothing for five years Moyes isn't changing that in one summer.

Not a big Moyes backer in general but this is spot on.

Look at the benches we had for most of last season as a guide to how far we had to go.

Only game I am livid with him for this season is Wolves in the cup, utter idiocy and could have told you the deflating effect it would have.

It is a rebuild season, but the manager is playing soft arse not using the players he’s been given to rebuild with. If we are taking it as a season for rebuilding then the young players we’ve brought in need to be playing to develop, not left on the bench for a lad who won’t even be here next season, or hooked off whilst others are stinking the gaff out with immunity.

Do you honestly think that fans would cut him some slack if he played a load of kids and they struggled? There’s no way people would be ok with a season of transition like that. Nowadays results over a rolling 3 month period dictate a manager’s longevity at most clubs. Iraola didn’t win any of his first 9 games, losing most. I doubt he would have lasted at Everton.

Sean Dyche had two spells of about 15 games without a win and only left when he gave up.

David Moyes finished 17th in his first stint and was allowed to carry on until something better came along.

The only two managers I can really remember being forced out because of fan pressure are Allardyce and Martinez. Benitez doesn’t count and should be air brushed.

It’s a huge myth about Everton fans being impatient and hard to please. I’d say we’re the most patient in the division. 30 years of nothing.

Silva and lampard were both effectively forced out as well.

There was no real animosity towards either on a personal level, but there was huge pressure on moshiri/the board to make a change.

I think Allardyche was always a stop gap to the summer and was always going to leave for Silva to come in so dont think that one was fan pressure

I was at West Ham that last game of his season and he had another year on his contract and fans made their feelings known that day, but I think you are right he was gone anyway.

I never wanted moyes back, don't want him there now, but I accept he's here for at least this season, and I've got zero expectations other than us hopefully avoiding a relegation battle.

He gets slaughtered for being a negative dour fucker with no ambition and yet there's a thread about ndiaye on here where irs universally accepted he's 'too good' for us and we're resigned to him fucking off at the end of the season.

The one manager we had who actually tried to talk the club up and be positive was hounded out after being labelled a fraud etc etc with some dickheads actually wanting us to lose a Wembley semi final so he would get sacked.

Don't know why you've got your knickers in a twist over this but if you think a pretty much unknown manager (as iraola was), would come into everton, not win any of his first 9 games, and be widely allowed time with no criticism, then you're deluded.

THing is I agree with you on most of what you've said there (especially the bit about Martinez). But the 'brains trust' thing irked me as if to say anyone who thinks Moyes should not be our manager anymore is somehow a bit of a thicko that doesn't understand our position in the world.

You said in your post we need to give managers time to impart their style onto the squad, as ultimately it will bear dividends and again I broadly agree with you.....but the evidence on Moyes is we all know what 'style' he likes to impart on his players and we all know it gets us fhuckin nowhere near where we want to be.

If you truly believe there is David Moyes 2.0 raring to get out there and give us all the benefit of his years of experience in the game then I'd challenge you to tell me what you see, because I can't see it.

I don't think for one second Moyes will implement some previously unseen attacking philosophy.

I've just said i didn't want him back, but he is back, and he is what he is. A safe pair of hands to hopefully improve us and steady us until the friedkin's and the new background structure is in place, and then they'll bring in their own man.

I just don't think if we made a change now we'd end up with the calibre of manager we desperately need.

I don't think it's even that. He sees O'Brien is the better option at RB yet when he needs to make an attacking change he needlessly fucks with the back four because Garner is one of his favourites and he doesn't want to take him off

Yes a new manager needs time but since 1995 we’ve had early Moyes, season 1 St Bob and season 2 don Carlo where there has been an obvious, appreciable improvement in what the team have been doing with a bit of hope that it could continue. This version of Moyes is the one we all detested! Disinterested, miserable, conservative and liable to mess up an important game and Harlem Globetrotter the tits off our next opponents in an utterly meaningless game.

The squad looks on the way to a decent rebuild but Moyes will allow them to stagnate and when we do get better full backs and a decent striker the likes of Dibling and Alcaraz will be thinking about going elsewhere.

We just seem to be relentlessly joyless.

Spot on post. We've a decent side and Moyes is going to waste it. The players will get disillusioned and move on, rather that staying to build a decent team. It's imperative we add to this team and get a manager who will get the best from them to be exciting and attacking. We won't though and the rebuild starts again. Setting us back again and again. That's the disappointment for me.

valid point but I think he could be getting a better tune out of them, it does seem like rinse and repeat a lot of the time, Ndiaye and Grealish may not be here next season and take them out and we're struggling big time

Spurs an Utd weren’t decent last season but both beat us 4-0 at their gaffs. Everyone said Spurs were shite last week but they beat us 3-0 at home. When was the last time we played shite a won 3-0 away from home??

Or won at Stamford Bridge like Sunderland did (again) before we have.

That may be, but (pedant head on) how can we be even close to decent with Barry, and/or Beto starting, and the only right full back being Coleman?

We'll be fine I'm sure, mid-lower mid table is my guess. However with such massive gaps, the better teams, and those with better managers will easily suss us out.

Dyche admitted he couldn't get any more out of the players or wtte. Gone.
With Moyes it's different. We know what we are going to get. Pragmatism, some half decent displays, some shite ones and many that are just meh. That will be accompanied with stubbornness, predictably shit habits, and last but not least, a cunt of an attitude in cup comps.
It's 2026 in 8 weeks and we're stuck in 2003.

I think my biggest point is that…if we’re rebuilding, which we agree we are..then let’s give some playing time to the likes of Dibling and Armstrong.

If he played a few kids, even as sub, or showed a bit of enterprise, fellas would forgive. Sure some would shout 'naive' and 'we need experience' when we lost, as well as other shit stuff, but at least we could see what he is trying to do.

We've rebuilt considerably compared to what we had. None of your '4 point cycle' apply. It's basically Moyes being Moyes. He's came in and done nothing different. So we stay stagnated.
