It was good as long as it lasted wasn't it.

Walter bombing Madar out immediately on arriving and then presiding over a team that scored two league goals from open play before Christmas in '98-99 was a herald of what was to follow.

On the 98-99 preseason Dutch tour, days after Walter Smith got the job as manager, Madar was brought on as a sub after about an hour of the friendly at Fortuna Sittard and which we were losing. About two mins later he went in for a loose ball with a defender at waist height and clattered him hard. Straight red and he never played for Smith again.
Madar clearly wanted out and voted with his feet.

We’d have gone down if it wasn’t for Madar. His goals kept us up that year and he was available on a free. Clearly we had no money to spend and nowhere near enough to spend on a striker to keep us up, so to find him was something of master stroke too.

Think by his own admission, Madar regrets how he behaved at times now but without his goals we were sunk, so I reckon should be fondly remembered by us all.

Plus, he gave a cool af interview on MOTD when asked he thought Everton could stay up and he just gave a Gallic shrug and replied with “Yes, of course”.

If only everything in life was as reliable as Dave Watson

His arrival transformed us and was a huge reason we stayed up.

Way better than Bakayoko who replaced him for about 4m
