its a broad church.

working for myself, ive found its enabled me to work more effectively. nothing mega, but just little things here and there. ive found the more ive delved, the more it opens up to you. you get ideas for it that a week ago you had no idea it could do - its not just a posh search engine.

had a bit of a "wow" moment with it the other day though - - i do a lot of highways snagging reports. to save standing there in the pissing rain trying to write down how many kerbs are broken on a road ive started using a gopro (insta360 acepro 2 actually - but same thing) and narrating any problems i see.

i then have to run through it back home and make a word document with screen grabs and defects so it can be quoted for repair.

i will caveat this and say i havent sat down and set this up yet, but out of curiosity i asked chatgpt the other day if it could:

write me a windows app that could let me upload a video and a subtitle file (which is created from the audio) and then create a word document with a screengrab and subtitle text on each page, one per page.

all i have to do is say "defect" when the camera is pointing at the problem on site (and remember not to chunner away to myself while i am doing the inspection) and it will know where to extract the screengrab from in the video.

chatgpt had a think and then said i need to do x,y,z (mainly install python) and then spat out a load of code to be copied into a file.

it said it could write me detailed instructions on how to set it up.

if it works this means it will save me hours on a job which i can still charge my full whack for.

I've been using it when migrating websites from one set of templates to another. It writes me the Python code to scrape all the HTML out of a specific container on all pages of the site I'm migrating, allowing me to then manipulate the code as I need. It does the same thing for all of the images on each site. This saves me so much time.

I also use it to check a specific set of staff profiles that are still using deprecated URLs that have had various redirects applied to them - it visits the page via the redirects, but then rewrites the code for me, putting in the up-to-date URL. Again, a humungous time saver.

I massively dislike the concept, and worry about the jobs it is going supersede (because we know we're not going to all get a nice universal benefit to offset the amount of money the already rich feckers who own everything are going to save by getting rid of all our salaries), but as a small task time-saving tool for me, it has been great.

The worst job I have ever had was six months in IT business services around the time ChatGPT went public.

The bullshit use cases being developed for AI (still happening) were well summed up in the Goldman Sachs analysis ‘what trillion dollar problem is this trillion dollar solution able to solve’.

The power consumption, the water consumption, the biases, the disinformation, the damage to the creative arts and the plagiarism of thousands upon thousands of authors’ work (including me - it’s been trained on four of my books) and the fact that is creating a financial bubble that when it pops will blow up large parts of the economy vastly outweigh the ‘benefit’ of inaccurate summaries of meetings and reports or the ability to code quicker.

Thiel is pushing it because he doesn’t see the point of people, and has been quite open about that. But hey, we’re about to outsource much of our healthcare data systems to him. Great.
