Fucking awful that but wasn't his mate who found him saying he wanted the truth to come out because he didn't think he meant to do it? I presumed he'd had an 'accidental' overdose from what I'd read about it and what he'd said.
Incredibly sad all round.

Very sad.

Around 80 men a week commit suicide in the UK and it’s the biggest killer of men under the age of 50.

More needs to be done.

Sadly suicide risk increases in depression when there is a slight improvement from chronic severe depression because there’s a slight increase in motivation

Strangely it's the incongruous ones like Ricky Hatton and Gary Speed that do sort of make some sense to me. Trauma and the resulting depression are inside certain people regardless of their external position. Often it seems that their status is a result of it.

Coping mechanisms for negative feelings inside can and regularly do drive technically positive traits and even superpowers. perfectionism, determination, resilience, one track mindedness. Hyperfocussing on those things is a well known trait to try and outrun trauma and negative feelings. You can sort of see why when people attain those heights, achieve everything that can be achhieved in their field, suddenly find at the end of their careers that despite it all, those familiar feelings are still there. How hopeless and desperate that must feel. Like, ive tried everything and yet I still feel this way. So there is no other option as living in emotional pain isn't living.

A timely reminder for everyone that regardless of your external circumstances, if you're in pain, talk to someone about it, rather than trying to cope.

Still shocking obviously but with Hatton there was a public history of depresssion, substance abuse etc. Gary Speed, from the outside looking in at least, was like a lightning bolt.

So sad - it often has nothing to do with wealth or social status. It is a chronic illness like cancer or other physical illnesses.

Got to be an illness, got to be. People say it's a cowards way out, but fûck me that takes some bottle to carry that through, in the face of every instinct you have.

I'll never get the hanging bit like, surely a bottle of scotch and 3 million tablets? That'd be my way I reckon, but how can you get into the head of someone in that place until you're there yourself. Grim, la.
