No. It was far too early for a title decider Vern.
It was the game where Dalglish scored after about 13 seconds.

Our defence was all over the place that day. Ian Marshall got the curly finger at half time, to be replaced by Adrian Heath. Harper dropped back from midfield to LB. Van Den Hauwe moved to centre half alongside Ratcliffe, and we won the second half, 2-0.

Grobellaar made about 3 freakishly brilliant saves. One from Heath, which was actually world class.

I sticks in the mind as one of Kendalls biggest but rare managerial mistakes, Playing Harper in midfield in place of the injured Reid, and throwing Marshall in at Centre half, instead of the tried and trusted Van den Hauwe.

Kevin Richardson was left out of the entire squad that day, surely a better replacement for Reid, than Harper?

There was nothing wrong with the actual block tackle. Shagger didn't receive a yellow or red. Just a freak accident. I recall Dalglish pointing the finger and speaking in the press about it, more or less accusing GS of an "intentional leg break".

You're right, Stevens career did indeed stall for a while. Seemed content to plod through games after that, for Everton and indeed England. Remember him being blamed by TV pundits and the press for England's 1-3 mauling by Van Basten and Gullit in the 88 Euro's.

They tore him to shreds. His confidence was well and truly shattered even before that. Rangers coughing up £1.2m for him in August 88 probably done us a favour. He was well on the slide in England. A performing chimp would get a game in the Scottish league, though.

Seven months after lifting the league and cup double, his leg was badly broken following a mistimed tackle from Everton's Gary Stevens in the League Cup fifth round game in January 1987.
