Barry the Striker

Disclaimer:

I am not writing him off. I do know people need time to settle, I also realise that he is new to the country, I also know that the rest of the team have been ropey at best.

But he looks more out of his depth than people normally are, looks weak, not that good with the ball etc etc

I am really nice and like to give people the chance but what is it that he is supposed to be?

His record is "so-so". I am wondering what the potential is with him? He doesnt look like a goal scorer and he doesnt look like a target man or tricky wide forward.

Its just a bit of a head scratcher

I often wonder just how much thought goes into what type of player they are and how the style of play that's got them so highly rated, fits into our side.

It all seems a bit of a scattergun approach to our transfer business, as far as strikers are concerned.

I would prefer the club to get in a muck and bullets championship striker, maybe with a little prem experience.

Ollie McBurnie has just joined Hull city on a free. Even playing for an awful Sheff united, he created major havoc against teams. Weighs in with a few goals, but assists due to his aerial prowess.
Never gives defenders a minutes peace, gave VVD a torrid time in last outing v Liverpool.

Nobody would touch Wayne Clarke with a barge pole when Kendall signed him. There is value to be had in the Championship.

Apart from the aerial prowess bit I'm sure I read the same about a lad called Neal Maupay a couple of years back.

There is value to be had there. Generally because they aren't good enough to make the step up.

I love Oli McBurnie as a lad and was quite fond of him as a player when he was at ours, but he isn't even good enough for a mid-level Championship club like my own to consider paying maybe 1.2-1.5m in a signing on fee plus wages in excess of mid-20s grand a week.

If he isn't good enough for us, a club with admittedly limited resources who have to be a bit choosey in how it allocates its cash, then I'm not sure he was ever going to be what Everton require.

They got relegated, which under the terms of his contract meant he could leave on a free. Which is obviously extremely lucrative for the fella.

Had they not gone down, don't think he'd have been coming back. Seemed to love it out there.

Which is understandable, frankly.

He's tall, which seems to command a premium.
Very unpolished and clearly not up to speed. We're living in a time when £30m notes gets you some potential to sit on a bench for 6 months and see if he develops. That's the game now. People's mindset hasn't really moved on - they assume it should mean he's an automatic first team pick and he's just not going to be. He might get a run if Beto gets crocked, but he's effectively in Beto's position when DCL was ahead of him.

This seems to totally add up. Which then makes me wonder why we buy him when we already have two "not ready" types with similar "attributes"

Blimey, that's a very decent and equally depressing assessment of the situation.

I can see what the club is trying buying some of these younger players with the hope of developing them and making a profit but as usual they just seem to have overlooked the need to also get players who can immediately slot into the team and provide reliable cover when players get injured.

True but they are buying players a year too late. Was the same with Onana. Could have had him the year before for £15 million and loaned him straight away to another team.

I haven't seen enough of him to be able to form an opinion. I thought he looked pretty decent in the first half of that Roma game but then got hooked.

He does seem to be a Beto MK2 though in style and substance which begs the question what is he for as we already have Beto MK1.

Which is why I’m unarsed. Weird decisions taken time and again. It’s exhausting. Totally immune to it now. We’ll be brassick for the next 10 years now too.
