If you don’t have a bay leaf, a credit or debit card is an ideal substitute as it has the same texture and as much effect on the flavour.

You can get specific Indian bay leaves but I only use them making a base gravy

Only use bay leaves in stews and casseroles.

You can.

Curry leaves are better - and edible.

Always good to use fresh spices and fry them off gently to release aromatics.
