Dealing with racist chatter protocol.

So last night I was at a family meal in a restaurant when one of my fellow diners pops up with an anecdote about how them dirty asylum seekers are starting to encroach into our town.

Within minutes the conversation descended into a frenzy of ill-informed bollocks from 90% of the people around the table as everyone else tried to chip in with their own take on how 'this country is going to the dogs'.

Depressingly it's not a unique situation to find yourself in these days and I can think of at least four or five other groups of people I know, that I could have been having that meal with last night and the conversation would have been the same.

Years ago, I would have fought verhemently against it, but much to my eternal shame I just sat there saying nothing, and occasionally trying to change the subject to something less controversial like abortion or the prospect of global nuclear war, but to no avail.

I feared that getting involved would only make the conversation turn into a heated debate and soon all eyes in the restaurant would be on our table, and I was embarrassed enough as it was.

At one point I even considered just getting up and quietly leaving, and mouthed to my missus across the table what I wanted to do, but she made me see that wasn't a good option either.

So what is the protocol these days for finding yourselves in these situations, because I am sure we are all regularly encountering this nonsense.

Do you stand up and argue back, trying to convince these people who don't want to be convinced of the massive holes in their arguments, whilst risking escalation that will inevitably make you look like the bad guy amongst people who are still essentially amongst those closest to you>

....or do you sit there, shamefully, like a massive shithouse as I did, just hoping it all goes away.

Point out that all utilities are in large part owned by foreign companies and that we are getting bent over and fucked by said companies, simply because they can. Hence they have far less money in their arse pockets. This is fuck all to do with people in boats, this because successive governments have allowed it.

Also mention the decline in other services, health, education, transport and highways. Finally state the main reasons that the country has gone to shit is to do 50 years of neo-liberalism and excessive greed. Then talk about nuclear war when the thick cunts shut up.

Absolutely this. There's loads of good advice down in this here thread, but in the vast majority of cases if you enacted it, you'd end up in an argument that ends with you calling your friends and loved ones thick for refusing to understand where you are coming from. I don't really think that's an option I want to be getting involved in.

Its easy to block people from Facebook and Social Media etc (I don't even use FB at all anymore for this precise reason). But in the case of face to face gatherings with people who you otherwise love and respect, for me its not worth the risk of getting into that sort of confrontation.....doesn't stop me feeling guilty and empty for not doing so though.

I would start with "Did you vote for Brexit?" and take it from there.

One of the desired side effects of Brexit was to control the influx of cheap European labour by ending free movement. On the flip side, the UK lost membership of the Dublin III Agreement that enabled EU countries to return asylum seekers to the first EU country of entry.

So, the Brexiteers got what they wanted but, sadly, they swapped the ability to screen out 'scruffy Eastern Europeans' for an open invitation to asylum seekers. The first small boats started arriving in 2018, and the UK lost any power to return arrivals when transition ended in 2020. The UK return numbers were low but then again, we didn't have todays arrival numbers. Asylum seekers will gladly traverse the European continent because the UK has no power of automatic return and we have to process claims case by case.

Starmer's return agreement with France is a first step but it's going to take ages to achieve the same capability. All thanks to TCBJ, his predecessors and years of under-investment in housing and infrastructure vs population growth.

I'd end with "If you want to know why the country's fucked, look at 13 years of blind Tory incompetence." then shit in their creme brulee.

I’ve said before on here, I work on a refugee project and have many colleagues who’ve become friends who are refugees. With family members and friends who have half a brain and an ounce of compassion, I would challenge them and set them straight on the reality of the situation.

I’ve binned a fair acquaintance’s off from social media and never engage them with conversations around the subject because their mind has been made up and they are happy to join in with the hate.

The other week, a bloke I know posted on FB about sinking the boats in the channel including a picture of women and kids. He got lots of support and likes etc. His following post was a picture of a couple of glasses of wine with the words ‘Be Happy People’.

In short, people are cunts.

Luckily havent haqd to deal with it in awhile, when ive had coworkers come out with stuff ive polietly either explained how theyre incorrect, ive also found using humour/jokes is a good way of getting people to see when theyre being incorrect

Unfortunately it seems to be rife now, a friends son recently did work for a MP and said when he was allowed to sit in on constituents coming in to see the MP about 80% of the time it was about immigrants, and the rest the usual stuff about roads etc

Having lived in a Tory heartland for most of my life, this happens on occasion.

If I am on the outside of this conversation, I ignore the buffoons ie a lot of people talking "near" me but not "with" me. Afterall these people wont grow a conscience or wisdom because of me.

If I am "involved" I will either destroy an argument (because they have no argument), ask them to show me how its wrong (people usually clam up and talk about "opinions").

or

I will quietly take the "these successive governments LOVE us arguing about this because it means they dont have to do their jobs in other area's, its gone on soo long that I think they reckon we're thick, lets not fall into that trap eh"

Possibly, getting them to talk about things that DO matter.

I think your last point hits the nail on the head and is the most effective strategy in this situation.

Also when I worked in Social Care a colleague used to have an Immigration Myth Buster work sheet similar to this for when discussing the issue with service users.

It’s a difficult one because if you start arguing with people it’s easy to get wound up and then you lose the thread of your argument.

I love the sheet. Is it covered by copyright as if not I am going to ask a friend in local govt. if they can adapt it for the North West?

There are just a few complaints people make that I struggle to answer.

1) If the area the asylum seeker comes from is dangerous why are women and children being left behind? This is in relation to it being mainly young men on the boats. I try to answer this by saying they are the ones most likely to be conscripted but that doesnt always work.

2) Why are people being moved out of their rented houses and asylum seekers moved in - usually via a newly created HMO? It does appear they take priority over homeless people. One women I know with 2 children under 16 and a 19 year old is in her 4th house in 7 months - she has been told this one is hers now. I have tried to help 3 in the last few months.

Its not always easy to blame the media as people are seeing these things happening in their area.

I am not sure about the copyright, the one my colleague had didn't relate specifically to an area and was just the general facts.

I am sure there will be plenty of literature available that could be adapted

Regarding 1, I suppose men in lots of places are the main bread winners and are seen as the most likely to be able to get work in the new country, they would then bring the family over when settled.

Men are also the most likely to be conscripted and have to face the consequences if they object. Poltical Instability would make males more vulnerable.

Men would also be seen as most likely to cope with a dangerous journey.

They probably can't.

Reminding them that we're basically a country of immigrants (historically) could be an interesting move also...

All valid stuff, but I think ultimately people just don't really care about being proved wrong. Deep down their ignorance suits their world view and no amount of trying to re-educate them is going to make a difference.

I think it is futile trying to argue back to be honest. The older I’ve gotten the more I realise that people rarely change their opinion on things, and even if they do it is more of a process that happens over years because of experiences. I politely give my opinion if asked. If people are really obnoxious I try to avoid their company as much as possible.

That's the crux of the matter though.....I could do all that easily, but calmly isn't my strong point, especially when you know that most of the people on the other side of this argument like to shout their opinions at you if you disagree with them.

Like I said, years ago I'd happily shout back my own, but now I just can't trust myself not to lose my shit with them, so tend to avoid the confrontation.
