Was Pickford England's number 1 when we signed him? He certainly was the following year in the Russian World Cup. The only reason he isn't seen as genuinely world class and one of the "best in the werld" is because he plays for us. Got to be up there though as a top big name signing.

Just outside the 40 years but Andy Gray as he was the record transfer fee at the time wolves paid villa nearly £1.5m in 1979.
Wonder what that would be in today's transfer market.

We took Kanchelskis from United who were the best about then.

James was a brllliant player but a piss taker, as his subsequent career has proved. Lukaku wasn’t a big name when we signed him. Hence Chelsea allowing him to leave in the first place. He shouldn’t even be on the list.

Actually Cottee was supposedly the hottest property in England when we bought him. So it could be him.

Overall I’d say Kanchelskis

He scored a lot of goals in the few seasons before we signed him including some belters So can see why we wanted him

Cottee was the hottest property in Football when we signed him. Top scorer the year before in a West Ham team that finished 3rd and Utd, Arsenal and Liverpool were all thought to be ahead of us in the queue to sign him.

Lineker even more so, joint top scorer in 84-85 alongside Kerry Dixon, that was in a season when Sharpy scored loads for us too.
