Absolutely, only had to hang around for 15 more minutes, India were on the brink of giving up, his reckless dismissal totally rejuvinated them, harsh, unfair maybe but true.

It’s not the full truth though, they also got the ball swinging and seaming again in that last session, that would have happened even if brook was still there and he might have got a good one and got out. Absolutely no criticism of him, for me. Others have to step up. And didn’t.

Jamie Smith is starting to look like the flattest of flat track bullies. Can’t wait to see how he responds in Australia.

Defo agree, the way conditions went it was even more right I reckon for Brook to have tried to get it over with asap. It was "reckless" to do the hook that Siraj dropped on 19 if its out so you either think he needs to block it all the time or just accept the way he plays is great and there will be the odd one that goes wrong.

Bethell & Smith both totally flapped it. If Stokes and Woakes were fit we still win that even after Brook & Root go

Defo something hard to take to about Smith, although to be fair his keeping has been good.

I think you have to take the rough with the smooth with Brook. I do, however, wonder if Tongue is reflecting on his opening over of 13 wides.

His batting gave England a tremendous chance and India are a great side …

I’m sure him and Root will be frustrated but if it wasn’t for them etc….

Bethel was shite - looked absolutely terrified and a walking wicket.

It was probably a fitting result between two well matched sides who went hammer and tong for the entire series….

It was a magnificent series, sporting drama at its best.

He has been, but big difference between Siraj taking your wicket and you giving it away by running into the car park swinging.

I think his was with the confidence that got him to a century, and still with 6 wickets left, but Bethell's was just idiotic bearing in mind the situation. Obviously he shouldn't have been there in the first place.

5 wickets really, we saw in the first inning how the batters following Brook performed. Forwarded etc.

If he hadn't taken it to the Indians, England would never have reached the dominant position they did. He ripped the heart out of the Indian bowlers. He's hit a half century and a century in this test, whereas some others have majorly underperformed.

It was rash and somewhat arrogant, but he's just got to learn from this, but Root, Bethell, Smith, Overton and Atkinson should easily have been enough to see England through. They were 332/4 when Bethell got out.

Pope averages 72 at the Oval, but you wouldn't think so based on this game. Smith averaged 5 and Bethell 5.5 and 6 catches were dropped in that Indian 2nd innings. England went from 175/3 to 247 all out in the first innings. I think that's where the game was lost, not another 370+ run chase.

The fact remains he’s an outstanding batter who was aware the tail were unreliable given their performance in the first innings.
He should have simply played out the rest of the innings with his also outstanding partner.
Number 1&3 batters in the world.

It’s a very British thing this, to criticise the one who did the most to win the game, because it wasn’t enough. It just needed the numbers 5/6/7/8 to contribute something and they didn’t.

If they aren’t capable to bat in a crisis then stokes and McCullum are at fault for the mentality and the selections.

It's the result of trying to integrate Bazball with some realistic game management,

Not a chance the Aussies throw an opportunity like this away. Smith looked like a completely different player because of the situation. They've been used to playing so freely without pressure under Bazball, that they don't know what to do when it's truly on. Smith was like a deer in the headlights from the moment he came in yesterday. With his ability, he should've taken a leading part in bringing this home.

It happens though, Australia went from 264/2 to 334a/o at the Oval in their last test against us to lose in very similar circumstances.
