I loved his 77-78 team. I think it was 78-79 when he started the possession stuff. I remember him defending that approach in his programme notes - it could have been written by Roberto just with not as many phenomenals in.

Part of our problem is exactly this.
"Who's worked for us before?" is nearly as bad as "who lives the closest?".

Just get a good manager.
So in short, none of them.

Find someone else who's actually good in the present day with some drive and innovation on display rather than "already has Finch Farm in their satnav" or "only lives round the corner".

Problem is, the established successful managers won’t come to us because there’s no European football on offer and anyone unproven would be a punt.

That Corberan or Cifuentes look good, but would be a massive risk.

Hiring Guardiola, Ancelotti, Mourinho etc would be a risk, they're all risky. No one guarantees success. I can't believe out of all the managers in the world, Moyes was the standout option rather than just being convenient.
Have we ever had a manager who won something with us that had already won stuff elsewhere?

Kendall, Catterick, Royle hadn't unless you count promotions (which I don't). All risks.

Harry Catterick had managed the only club to get close to the only Spurs team worth watching in my lifetime. It is worth remembering that with Sheffield Wednesday close to going out of business they were a giant of the 1st Division under Catterick.

I'm not knocking any of them, I'm saying they had won nothing of note before joining Everton. So hiring managers with trophies to their name isn't historically where we've found our best managers.

Agree they were all risks but it’s a different world. Difference is that if we had gone down in the first couple of seasons under Catterick or Kendall (less so under Royle) chances are we’d have been back up in a season with no harm done. The financial implications of getting relegated now make the risks more significant.
