I was reminded about this today, but I used to have to complete timesheets which had to break down everything into chargeable jobs and types of non-project time, at a minute (my newt) level. Unfortunately this not only left zero slack, but became a nightmare for any project where anything wasn't just plain sailing, which was basically all of them. The irony of all this was, the boss would accuse anybody of being lazy for not meeting targets, yet she never once got off her arse and was by far the laziest in the entire office. Felt like I'd been freed from prison once I left that environment.

I worked in a factory on Knowsley industrial estate when I was 18, making parts for pay phones. The metal used to arrive on lorries from Sheffield, long metal rods always covered in oil. In winter it was often covered in snow & ice. If you were lucky you'd hear the lorry pull up outside & hide in the bogs while the foreman chose the lads to carry the rods into the factory. Back breaking work, you got covered in shite & picked up loads of metal splinters.

Whenever I'm having a shite day in the office I think back to them days.

Away days. Absolute waste of time and money, just so senior management could tick a box.

Annual and half yearly appraisals (giving and receiving) pointless.

Christmas meal, being stuck in a social situation with people whose only thing in common is working together.

Writing an annual and quarterly report that was pretty much the same every year. Collating figure and ananlysing the. And coming out with the same conclusion so my boss can not bother reading it.

The fate of the fallen, nobody knows where I came from.
Even I have forgotten.

Attending courses.

Almost invariably they'd consist of stuff we already knew, or stuff we didn't want to know and was of no possible use to man or beast.

The worst ones were run by dunces who did not know their subject and called people aggressive who challenged the shite they came out with

Sitting on a train up to London at the crack of dawn and returning often about 9pm (often with a bottle of wine for company). Daily.

I did it once recently for a work thing and ot seems amazing to me now that I, or anyone did this every day.

I used to have to do timesheets, as a bench joiner churning out replica Italian furniture, mostly built with vaneered MDF.

Used to finish half hour from end of shift. In that time you would sharpen your tools, that needed it, and re stock your bench with screws, dowels, washers, woodglue, sandpaper etc, and fill in them fcuking timesheets.

There was always arguments with management, because they ran a bonus scheme there, related to productivity. God i hated them sheets!

Used to get a quick 3 minute shower before driving home.

Hated that job. NINE fcukin years I spent there.

Used to have a job like that so started writing 'went for a shit' twice a day on the sheet. 40 minutes a day, never got pulled on it.

Setting off at 3 am in my van for one days work in Catford or Newcastle or Bristol, it could be anywhere really.

Once there, unloading a full size bottle of Argon light, a 180 amp welder and tools from the van and hoping to god it doesn't rain as you'd invariably be welding outside.

Most of the work was in Birmingham or Manchester indoors but once or twice a fortnight would involve this malarkey.

12hr Night shifts.

But I didn't like the day shifts much better. So glad that ended 10 years ago.

I look back on mine with a bit of rose-tinted fondness, especially as the shift pattern meant I’d get a week off every month. There’s something daft about looking at the clock at 0045 and still not being halfway through your shift though.

I felt permanently jet lagged; never ever recovered. Miserable & depressed.
However, pension was wonderful & allowed me to pack in work at 57. I'm sure I'd be dead now if I'd carried on.

In a previous job during the time when we are still on Rivals, we did third-party underwriting and admin for a load of household-name banks and assurance companies.

It was part of my job to compile all the previous week's performance stats and results, for reporting to what I thought of at the time as being bigwigs at each of these companies (of course, I know them now to have been middle-management drones who just happened to have some contractual leverage over us). Every Monday morning, I would have to run about daft for a few hours getting them together and carefully explaining away in blips in service standard and fabricating evidence of what I'd done to address it.

Which would all have been pretty standard stuff if I hadn't spent every single Sunday in the pub getting absolutely launched.

The whole endeavour was beset with hangover-related mishaps and mini-crises, culminating in the morning I turned up still pished and neglected to send the reports at all. That was a great week.

Managing people - in the job I was at for 20+ years I progressed up to team leader level even though I never wanted to actually manage people, all the shite like giving appraisals, setting targets, monitoring KPI's etc hated it all. Much better now I don't have to get involved in all that drama.
Doing presentations - I used to have to fill in for the accounts manager and present the monthly results in front of all the senior managers, never was good at that stuff.

When I was at Uni (look away now legs) I had a job calling people and asking for money for charities. Usually people who already asset up a Dircet debit and I'd ask for more.

So I'd regularly, hungover, call people who would then tell me long tales about how happy they are with Dr barnados or whatever as they were saved as a kid by them. Then hit them with a request to up their direct debit.

chasing contractors to submit timesheets.

Every. Single. Contractor who works for me gets told when the deadline is as that if they miss it they wont get paid that week, yet every single week there are multiple guys that forget/do it late/do it wrong.

Almost without fail they kick off when they get paid late.

If its a one off or something outside their control the I will always do what I can to get it sorted, but when its the same guys week in and week out it gets right on my tits, it really does.

In my first job as a programmer we used to have to do 'walkthroughs' of all the changes we planned to an existing program before we were allowed to implement it.

These would consist of you and three or four of your more experienced colleagues going into a room with paper printouts of all the code and going through your changes line by line for their approval and/or comment.

I'd always go in pretty confident I'd done a great job of the task that had been given to me, only to emerge at the end a destroyed husk of a man who just wanted the ground to swallow him up.
