Is it really any different from sharing a taxi you pick up at the rank, only to find that the person in the queue in front or behind you is going to the same place, and you agree to share?

That’s been happening for years — even last season, someone offered to share a taxi with me from Lime Street to the ground.

I still try to avoid it like. A couple of years ago, the conversation turned to global warming (the taxi was diesel, and he was switching to electric). The passenger brought it up, and the driver enthusiastically agreed — apparently, the main cause of global warming wasn’t vehicle emissions, but brake dust. I kid you not.

Did this when I was about 17, bevvied in town at 3am, with some random older couple (in hindsight probably in their 30s - also my mate was with me as well, before you have visions of Gareth Keenan in the sidecar with the swingers).

They started arguing the minute the cab set off, and then started trying to drag me into it “see what I have to put up with, lad? Not my fault this is it, she’s a fucking knobhead.”

Long journey, that.

I did it when I lived in London a few times. A taxi out to Kingston used to be about 50/60 quid so if there were people going the same way it would halve the price. I just used to pretend to fall asleep pissed.
