They should have been told they need to spend 12 hrs Saturday and 12 hrs Sunday every weekend for the next 2 years planting trees in various areas owned by the local council.

It would cost a hell of a lot less, plus we would have thousands of trees to show for it.

its not just for chopping the thing down though is it? it was a well known, well loved symbol as well as a tree. and the act appalled everyone almost everyone i know.. people need to see the bigger picture rather than the granular detail.

Does the law specifically call for a stiffer sentence if the tree is well known & loved? Or are we now in a country where the legal ramifications of chopping down any tree not on your property calls for a 4 year jail term?

Justice shouldn't be dependent on sentiment, surely?

It’s not that either. Judges have sentencing guidelines according to whatever the crime is. They werent charged with chopping down a tree were they? It was criminal damage.

It's a shitty thing to have done obviously but it's weird seeing a sentence like that vs pedos/child porn convictions get suspended sentences.

Needs to be a giant league table of every criminal in jail.

So if you're 4th bottom for not paying your telly licence and you see a murderer get convicted you know you're getting out.

Will only serve 40 % of their sentence though so out in less than 2 , so they will be back out killing wildlife soon enough ( I'm sure they're into that too )
