Besides signing the likes of Johnson/Beattie/Yakubu who had all scored 15 plus Prem goals in a season, two of which had scored 20 plus before we signed them it's spot on.

Id say only Beattie was an abject failure from them 3. Johnson was decent and Yakubu was tremendous until his Achilles snapped in half.

He signed decent ones but after initial great spells he had them running the channels and stuff. Andy Johnson a prime example. Boss start then change of position. Same for Radzinski in some ways too.

Woeful is way off the mark.

Beattie scored at very close to a goal every 2 games in the 2+ seasons (approx 100 games) leading up to Everton signing him. At that time Dean Ashton had played a handful of games in the PL and was pretty unproven. He ultimately only played 62 PL games in total with a poor injury record.

Beattie was proven and an understandable signing that didn't turn out for whatever reason. Ashton was unproven and basically a bullet dodged. Ashton is the last player I'd beat Moyes up with over not signing.

Over the years it's probably fair to say Moyes has been in the top handful of managers in the league for getting relative value for money from his transfer fund. Feel free to disagree but I'm interested to know who has been significantly better off a similar level of funding.

I’m talking specifically about the use of the money at this point in time. not saying ashton was a world beater but norwich more than doubled their money on him in about 18 months. bent made charlton an absolute fortune.

I’m sure he’d recognise himself that period was extremely poor management from him, that he did well to come back from.

Ashton aside, my point was more that a player who had scored close on 50 goals in his last 100 games was very much an understandable signing and my recollection is that there was a lot of optimism amongst the support over the signing. He was only about 26 or 27 and should have been just entering his peak years. Why wouldn't we sign him ?

History shows that Beattie had basically peaked at Southampton and his time here was more than disappointing. But that's very much a hindsight take. Some signings work out, some don't. This clearly didn't but doesn't alter the fact that it appeared at the time a good capture and Moyes certainly wasn't getting slated for the signing.

Ultimately Beattie was sold for £4m so all things considered it was far from a business disaster, not like many of the disasters of the last decade. Thank the lord for Sheff U*

Everything was set up for someone mobile and aggressive. Instead we got his fat arse lumbering about. I wanted him to succeed, like all Everton players, but for that cash at that time, it was borderline criminal. It wasn't even entirely his fault, he clearly did ok at different clubs in different setups.
