In a place i once worked, the canteen manager called Ronnie, was like one of the 'lads'.
Morning break, Ronnie knew everyone's usual brekky order. As you walked in, he would shout "Bacon and tomato on, Tony"? "Egg and black on, Ste"?
He would never say 'toast' when he asked you if it was to be your usual order.
One Friday morning, the night shift on the Thursday night must have had 'time on their hands'. They had got a scrap piece of MDF, and some different paints and stencils, and screwed a new name plaque outside the canteen.
It said 'Canteen, run by Michelin star Chef, Eggon Ronnie. (A play on Egon Ronay's name). The Nickname sticks to this day.
He's a good blue. Saw him at the Bournemouth match, and referred to him as 'Eggon', which he said everyone calls him now. He runs a cafe in Chester these days.
