Correct. We kind of burn out our villification in one, at most two, matches and then return to meh. The first return of Fat Kid, in the Cup, was as vitriolic as anything I've ever known. There was then a spillover into the League game later that spring but any concentration on Crocky La was quickly sidelined by the slow realisation that United were there for the taking that night and fourth place might be a goer after all. The bedlam after Dunc's winner still sends shivers. By the time that Fat Kid returned for the following season we were all but ignoring him. But then, being the dickhead he was and probably still is, he decided to re-ignite it all by deliberately winding up the Park End, as though he was affronted by no longer being the object of ire. Eventually though his returns just became non-events.

Gary Speed was different (deffo not reopening that debate) because he never postured or gestured, and sure enough most of the vitriol had petered by the time of his third return. The revisionism that was put about when he died, that we'd subjected him to years and years of abuse, was typical of the assumed narrative about Evertonians. He got it full force on his first return, deffo got it at St James's (an Easter match?) but then it just fizzled like a jarg firework over the next few matches. There's no way he would have continued to feel intimidated in any of his returns say after 2000.

We're quite contentedly lazy in that respect. The only Geordie-Pickfordesque sketch that I can ever recall us sustaining right to the bitter end was for Brassband. But even that had a touch of comedy about it. We just don't seem to be bothered about sustaining it. Even Case would only get it in his Brighton or Southampton years if he made himself conspicuous enough on the pitch to remind us all that he actually was playing.

As usual, though, everyone else thinks they know better about how Evertonia acts and reacts

The Geordie and Kopite hatred of Pickford is like nothing we've ever peddled in terms of sustaining it year on year, meme on meme and inflatable upon inflatable.

    Perfect bedfellows of bellendery, really.

    Pet.
