You only ever hear that kind of description of the war from Brits.
It's literally Orwellian propaganda.
The leadership of the anarchist movement in Madrid collaborated with the fifth column to arrest or kill as many Communists as they could. As soon as that was done, the fifth column handed the Republic over to Franco.
They completely destroyed anarchism in Spain in the process.
It was so demoralised by its own record in the war that it fell apart in the exile, couldn't maintain any sort of illegal apparatus in the interior during the dictatorship, and couldn't re-establish itself after the transition.
