Katz did all the Steely dan stuff, superbly in my opinion. I think anyone who's anyone in pop/rock music of the 74-83 era, used Porcaro as a session drummer. He had played on the classic "Katy lied" Steely dan 1975 album. He was part of Boz Scaggs touring band at the time of "Silk Degrees", alongside Steve Lukather and Steve Porcaro which got him noticed 'mainstream' during Scaggs sell out world tour 77-78, appearing in the video's for 3 major hit singles at the time. I can honestly not think of a bad track Porcaro has played on. The list of artists and bands who've used his services is astonishing. His untimely death in 1992, aged 38, caused panic among many American artists who were heavy cocaine users. But apparently, his death was recorded as "accidental", after being found dead in the gardens of his LA mansion. George Benson, Warren Zevon, Steely Dan, Michael Jackson, Boz Scaggs, Dire Straits, Dave Gilmour, Diana Ross, Eric Carmen, Don Henley, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Miles Davis, Michael McDonald, Bruce Springsteen, Frankie Valli, The Bee Gees, Leo Sayer, Al Stewart, Barbara Streisand, 10cc, Andrew Gold, Christopher Cross, Sergio Mendes and Pink Floyd used his services, and he 'co wrote' with several of these artists. Far too many to list to be honest, but seeing him perform live with Toto at Wembley in the early 80s, just confirmed what a true professional. Toto were superb to be honest, and Porcaro's drumming stood out like a sore thumb. His drumming, Lukathers stunning guitar playing, Paich's immaculate keyboards. One of the best live shows I've ever seen. I had gone to the Chic gig, to see Nile Rodgers and his perspex guitar tbh. But Chic were a water tight 7-8 piece band back then, including the two females up front. I came out the theatre agog, after seeing the bassist in his double breasted suit steal the show for me. Note perfect all night, his 'slap' bass was breathtakingly good, and he kept up admirably under immense bass runs, so intricate at times. The drummer that night i think was Tony Thompson was also exceptional, and Nile Rodgers was his usual faultless self. But Edwards, a very quiet bloke, who preferred to play nowhere near centre stage, was the "star" that night. Even if you weren't really into the disco/funk vibe they gave off, the sheer quality of their musicianship was second to none. Top top drawer. Great gig that.
