That was one of the first signs with my dad. I'd look around the kitchen and find the ladle in the big drawer with all the bread and biscuits, and other pieces of cutlery in cupboards with glasses.
He clearly knew it wasn't right, but didn't know where to put them, and I wondered how that affected him.
