Just as environmental issues are painted as being down to the cars we drive, the cans we recycle and light bulbs we use (while big business pollutes with impunity), the government could solve this issue by well-planned legislation which makes social media companies responsible for the content they allow on their platforms. Surely no-one has missed the irony of the government trumpeting this policy on the Nazi, child abuse material generation website?
The social media firms are effectively publishers and/or broadcasters, so make them legally liable for content just as legacy publishers are responsible.
As for the "ID should be needed":
1. If anyone doesn't think the government will use this in the future to bring in compulsory ID, selling all your data to Palantir, then I worry about them using metal cutlery.
2. People value anonymity on social media because it allows them to have a laugh/talk about their lives without some busy cunt trying to get them sacked. A cynic might argue that the real reason politicians don't like SM anonymity is because it allows the public to call them out on their stupidity while removing their ability to punish those critics.
The ban will be ineffective for so many reasons: VPNs, kids finding other ways to communicate online, use of dodgier sites etc.
A truly pointless crackdown which will do nothing but please a country which increasingly hates young people.
Got it all together and I'm ready to seethe.![]()
