It's not just in rural areas. It was a biggish thing in Bootle/Netherton in the '80s/'90s. Lads with ferrets/terriers/lurchers. Over the Wirral for foxes and up around Altcar for hares on the lamp. Of course, the hares there were protected by Sam Bell the gamekeeper who was a bully that liked to beat kids up that had dogs. Got his comeuppance years later by lads that had grown up.
Lads still go out 'with the dogs' now but it's with permission from Welsh farmers. Kill anything that doesn't pay its way, is their mind-set.
