Smell can be coming from motor burning out on the freezer. I've known instances where the freezer can have the opposite effect, where it warms the food inside.

If its old, just get shut.

You don't want a dodgy electrical apppliance in you're house for obvious reasons.

If it is a free standing freezer, they are not particularly expensive anyway.
