I went veggie at 13 after a failed attempt at 12, not trying to go one better- mainly after reading about Neil Robinson. We didnt have everything with chips, but did have steak and kidney, liver and onions and vegetables were pressure cookered to death. Later my mum did do some foreign meals - lasagne/moussaka/sweet and sour but by then I was well off meat.

Dad eating heart and brawn along with spam and the smelliest fish imaginable made sure I stuck to it.

Eating out in the early 80s left me with the massive choice of mushroom omelette or cheese salad. Even most Chinese restaurants did not have much choice.
