According to the Associated Press, Vincent Chegini Chinweuwa was a struggling mechanic who lived in Brazil for six years. He hoped the drugs would help give him a luxurious lifestyle in his home country, Nigeria. He was found with 2.6 kilograms (5.7 pounds) of cocaine. Egg-shaped packages of the drug were wrapped in gold aluminum foil and stuffed inside roasted chickens.
Nigeria has a reputation as a transfer point for drugs. But airport security recently improved after a man allegedly tried to use explosives on a plane headed for Detroit in 2009. After the ordeal, Nigeria purchased airport scanners and trained airport agents.
With the installation of scanners, authorities were able to identify more than 100 drug carriers last year alone. Airport security has found drugs inside suitcase fabric, worn in wigs, and inside a stethoscope, but this is the first attempt to pass off drugs as chicken stuffing.
