The 1970s hitmaker tells British magazine OK! that his own battles with alcohol have informed his opinion on booze - and his opinion is that it's worse than drugs. Cooper says he kicked the bottle back in 1983 after a long bout with alcoholism. He tells the mag that he never messed with drugs because of the criminal penalties he feared should he be caught.
"The last thing I ever wanted to do was go to jail, and back then you didn't just get a slap on the wrist if you were caught with drugs," Cooper says. "They put you straight in jail."
Nonetheless, the rocker says he's seen the math and by his own reckoning, the health dangers of legal drugs like cigarettes and alcohol outweigh those of illegal drugs. "You know, looking at statistics, I think drugs should be legal and alcohol and cigarettes should be illegal," he says. "They kill more than drugs do."
