I spent all of 1961 and 1962 at McGuire Air Force Base near Trenton New Jersey.
During most of that time my wife was living with her parents in Cranston Rhode island.
So I made MANY driving trips back and forth.
In June, July, and August it was very hot in a car that didn't have air conditioning.
Down the Connecticut Merritt Parkway, through New York City, across the George Washington Bridge, and onto the New Jersey turnpike at night.
Going through New York City you could smell the heat steaming off those concrete buildings.
After you crossed the bridge and came down onto the Jersey Pike you could watch the temperature gauge drop like a rock on the your car.
