An Extreme Heat Watch has been issued for the southern half of the Lower Peninsula ahead of a dangerous heat wave that is expected to slide into the Great Lakes region this weekend and continue to roast us into early next week.
The Extreme Heat Watch will be in effect from Saturday morning through Tuesday evening, the National Weather Service said. It may expand later into Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula, depending on how the forecast evolves.
“Consecutive days of heat indices near or above 100 combined with overnight low temperatures remaining in the 70s will lead to dangerous conditions through the start of the week,” NWS meteorologists said.
For right now, the Extreme Heat Watch includes these counties: Ottawa, Kent, Ionia, Clinton, Allegan, Barry, Eaton, Ingham, Van Buren, Kalamazoo, Calhoun, Jackson, Midland, Bay, Huron, Saginaw, Tuscola, Sanilac, Shiawassee, Genesee, Lapeer, St. Clair, Livingston, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw, Wayne, Lenawee and Monroe.
Daytime high temperatures will soar into the 90s for several days beginning on Saturday. But the heat index value - the “feels like” temperature that factors in humidity - means it will feel like 104+ degrees on some of those days, the NWS said.
“Heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events,” NWS staff said. “Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.”
