Doing a update shouldn't mess anything up.
On a Chromebook it only updates your security issues.

Where were your picture when you lost them?
I wouldn't store any pictures only on a computer or a web server.
They could be lost easy in both places.
Keep them on Flash Drives.
I have some of the same important things on three different Flash Drives and three different web servers.
