Singer and former beauty queen, Anita Bryant, who had her bubbling career destroyed by her anti-gay beliefs, has died at 84. Bryant died in her home in Edmond, Oklahoma, from cancer, according to her son William Green. The singer was 18 when she won the Miss Oklahoma beauty title and came in second for the Miss America title. Bryant went on to have a successful show business career for almost two decades, including singing the national anthem at the Super Bowl and at US President Lyndon B. Johnson's graveside. Famously, she starred in a long campaign of television commercials for the Florida Citrus Commission, in which she had the tagline, "Breakfast without orange juice is like a day without sunshine." In 1977, she protested Dade County's ban on discrimination against homosexuals, saying it “condones immorality and discriminates against my children’s rights to grow up a healthy, decent community.” The former beauty queen went on to found Save Our Children, an anti-gay organization that tied homosexuality to threats against children. Following her "controversial political activities," at a conference in Des Moines, a demonstrator pushed a banana pie into her face. Her contract with the citrus commission was canceled before the decade ended. Throughout her career, Bryant appeared on series' like 'The Ed Sullivan Show', 'The Tennesse Ford Show', and 'Perry Como's Kraft Music Hall.' The singer also appeared in commercials for Coca-Cola, Holiday Inn, Tupperware, Phillips 66, and Friedrich air conditioners. REST IN PEACE MS. BRYANT
