apprenticeship records 1843-1851

I am searching for the parents of George H.(Huxtable ?) Clogg born July 3, 1832 (not the George Clogg also born 1832 of parents Andrew and Ann Clogg). George is listed as a tinsmith apprentice in the house of Thomas Thorne Turner in the 1851 Census. I am hoping an Apprenticeship Register would give one or both parents names. His origin is a bit murky,

My grandfather, Samuel Robins apprenticed under James Husxtable. He completed his service in 188. And wqs immediately fired because Huxtable did not want to pay full wages. My grandfather was accused of "being late". That was inccorrect because my grandfather (and then my father) were always 10 minutes early! they prided themselves on puntuality. I have i8nhderited the apperenticeship papers. Samuel would eventually imigrate to Vancouver British Columbia and worked for the Vanacouver Monumental Works.

There are plenty of George Huxtable names there too, so one could have been the father!
He might have changed his occupation if he had not been apprenticed, as he would not have been "signed up" for a specific time.

Thanks to all of you. I am not familiar with the bastardy records so I would really like to know what source confirmed George Clogg as illegitimate. It's what I thought would be the case but I didn't know how to find it.

If any apprenticeship records have survived then you need to be looking at Apprenticeship Parish Records for the Parish he was born in, the Parish he is shown as living in whilst an apprentice and the parish of the person he was apprenticed to. If it was a private not parish apprenticeship then it would be unlikely that any Indentures have survived as copies would be help between both parties. You could try search Devon Heritage Online Catalogue to see if anything comes up for names of people involved, might also be worth checking for any Bastardy records as well

You are amazing! But what record showed George Clogg as illegitimate. He was my great grandfather, I never knew him but despite his murky background he ended up a well respected and well liked superintendent of a portion of a regional railroad in Ohio, retiring with the presentation a a pocket watch. It looks like Susan Clogg married a Thomas Williams
sometime between 1841 and 1844. Have been unable to find the marriage. In 1851 living in Ilfracombe with Mary Clogg aged 84, so born 1767 who must be Susan's Mother. Susan was bapt as Susanna 12.01.1806 Berynarbor, daughter of William and Mary Clougg (sic) nee Chugg(?)

So, Sometimes George Clogg used Huxtable as a middle name. There are a lot of Huxtables in Berynarbor so it's possible that his father was a Huxtable. Thank you.

looks as if he is son of Susan Clogg baptised 5.7.1832 Ilfracombe. 1841 with Thos and S=Hannah Kady Ilfracombe.
Perhaps mother died?
Hope this helps, I suggest father is a Huxtable, not uncommon in illigit situations to put fathers name in. If she did not marry him.

There is a George Clogg bapt 05.07.1832, Ilfracombe illeg. son of Susan Clogg. He appears to marry Maria Marshall Gould 07.01.1854. Ilfracombe, but profession is a Plumber, no father mentioned. There is also a burial of a George Clogg 15.08.1858 Combe Martin aged 26, which might not be the same George as George and Maria are in Ohio by 1860.

Thank you. This is what I suspected but tell me where does it indicate him as illegitimate?The George buried in 1858 is the son of Andrew and Ann Clogg. Perhaps the father was a Huxtable.

The baptism only shows a mother, not a father. Also marriage certificate has a line through where it should have name of the father, so you have to assume this George was illegitimate. Susan on 1841 aged 30, a servant. Sally
