Hammack / Hammick family of Ermington, Devon – seeking guidance
Posted by Gregory Hammack on 13/1/2026, 8:43 pm
Hello everyone,
My name is Gregory Hammack, from the USA, and I’m beginning some deeper research into my family history. Through parish records and colonial documents in the United States, I’ve been able to trace my direct line back to Ermington, Devon, in the early 1600s, under the surname Hammick (later Hammack/Hammock in America).
My ancestor, William Hammick, was baptized in Ermington in the 1620s and later emigrated to colonial Virginia. I’m very aware that many people here have far more experience with Devon records and local family history than I do, so I wanted to introduce myself and humbly ask for any guidance on how best to proceed from here.
In particular, I would be grateful for:
Any information on the Hammick name in Ermington or the surrounding South Hams parishes
Pointers to local records, resources, or researchers I should be aware of
Any contemporary descendants/relatives of William Hammick/Hammack
I’m not assuming any connections beyond what the records support, and I fully appreciate that not all lines can be extended further. My goal is to learn and to make sure I’m approaching this correctly.
Thank you very much for your time, and I appreciate any help or direction you may be willing to offer.
Kind regards, Gregory Hammack, Florida, USA
