St Mary and All Saints Church, Plymstock

Hello

My 2x-great-grandfather's brother, James ELLIOTT, was buried in the graveyard attached to St Mary and All Saints Church, Plymstock in 1901. His second wife, Margaret ELLIOTT, is also buried with him (she also died in 1901).

His first wife, Susan ELLIOTT (died 1861), and his son, James Edward ELLIOTT (died 1877) are buried in a separate grave in the same graveyard.

I would like to visit the graves when visiting the area next month. I have unsuccessfully tried to find a plan of the graveyard. Can anybody tell me if one exists, and if so, where to find it.

I know roughly where the headstone would be, it is next to a that for Redpath & Coleman which is Row R no 37 and your grave is Row R no 38, this is for the James and Margaret burial. The New extension area was to the right hand side of the Church as you are facing the door with the Garage behind you. It is the area that runs all down the right hand side of the Church Yard and the grave you want is partly under a tree if the tree is still there, you would have to check them out, haven't visited since 2019. You would be best view the cemetery register that gives details of graves and making a note of other graves in the Row, I know there are Algate & Oates headstones in it as well, Sadly many headstones have gone from this Churchyard over the years.

I have a photo of the headstone for Susan Elliott 1861 & James Edward Elliott 1877 if you don't have one that I am more than happy to share with you. I also have a map of the New Churchyard Extension consecrated in 1898 but it only shows Rows A B C D E, this is held at The Box in Ref 2736/20 which I can't share due to copyright.

I notice a reference against James Elliott on FMP that says he is buried in Row R. There is also a reference to Plymouth and Devon Records Office.
Archive Ref: 2736/20. Archive Event Churchyard register with plan. Against James Edward it says Section AH No. 41. Row 6. So perhaps get in touch with Records Office. Sally

This is the entry in the Churchyard register, looks as if they had a "slab headstone", not sure if this means laid flat and might now be covered over. The Churchyard Register with Plan Ref 2736/20 is available to view on Findmypast and I advise that it is browsed. This register gives details of grave furniture, such as headstone, kerb etc and details often of those buried in the grave. Thanks for all your help and suggestions.

I had found the plan on Findmypast, but I was sure how it fitted with what you can see on Google Maps.

I take it the extension is on the right, just inside the gate facing the main entrance. However, I am not sure what you are referring to, Chris, when you say the 'the garage is behind you'. Can't see a garage on GoogleMaps street view.

FYI, there are nice pictures on the headstones in this cemetery on the billiongraves website. Didn't realise that you couldn't go back and look again without paying. Should have copied the high-resolution images the first time I looked.

Looks like they were taken by Tabitha in 2012. I suspect I will need some secateurs to deal to the ivy.

I visited the St Mary and All Saints graveyard today and found the grave for James and Margaret ELLIOTT and the grave for Susan and James Edward ELLIOTT.

Assuming, the headstones have not been moved, the two graves are 'head to head', i.e., the headstones are back to back and touching. And as you said, Chris, the graves are under a tree (yes, the cedar is still there).

Being a hot day, I was wearing shorts. I wasn't expecting was the sea of stinging nettles, so didn't get too close, but close enough to get some photos.
