Where did William Gibbings marry Mary?

William Gibbings was baptised in Cheldon on 14 July 1719. His first wife was Mary and their first child was baptised in Coleridge (Coldridge) on 13 November 1742. I have not found any record of their marriage in either of the above parishes, and hence no surname for Mary. I am located in Australia and I am seeking help as to how I can trace their marriage date and Mary's surname.

I have looked at Coldridge and think that Mary, who appears to be first child of William and Mary Gibbings, was baptised 13th November, 1744, rather than 1742. I have also looked through marriages in Coldridge leading up to 1744 without success I am afraid. I did find a burial for Mary in 1753 and a remarriage for William in 1753, which you probably have already.

Hello Sally, thank you for taking up my challenge. I have the same details you have provided, looking again at Coleridge Baptisms again (sheet 0027) it gets pretty messy regarding the year, but I have Anne (Mary's sister) born 14.11.1744 I feel 1742 is accurate. Do you have any suggestions on how to find Mary and Williams marriage other than my flying from Melbourne and checking all the registers surrounding Coleridge/Cheldon?

Looking again at the baptisms I worked backwards from 1747 and think you are right that it was 1742.
I have looked again through Cheldon and Coldridge for marriage but without success. I have also looked outside of Devon but no luck. Coldridge is about 12.2.km (20 miles) from Cheldon by today's standard.
Perhaps they weren't married. Mammoth task to go through all local parish records. Sorry could not be of any more help. Sally

Thanks Sally, yes a mammoth task to go through all the registers, one day they might all be online alphabetically which would make it easier for future researchers.

Have you tried variable spelling of the name? Could be Gibbins, Gibbons, devon accents can change the spelling over time. Have you looked on National archives for the surname and parish, in case he was illigit, and his mother married a Gibbings? Or try a marriage of a William and Mary in the parish, to see what surnames come up. He could have been married in a different name, and then found out later that his name was incorrect, I have had that, fortunately with mine they had a child which was registered so I was able to work it the other way around, using the mothers name to find the marriage.

Hello Judith, thanks for responding, I have covered all your suggestions, and right now it seems as though my options are limited to researching all the Parishes around Cheldon and then gradually working outwards until I reach a designated point where I throw in the towel. I will look to see if there are any professionals who might help, otherwise it will be my next trip to the UK. Cheers Paul

Was he in the military at all? could have been in Ireland, have you looked there?

Many parish registers for Devon have been indexed and are available on the Find My Past website. Most of those not available on FMP are available on the Devonfhs members area of their website.Not all are indexed but these parishes include nearby Lapford so it may pay you to join the society and browse the images for your missing couple

Hello Joan, thanks for your posting, apologies for not responding sooner. I am a new member of DHFS and have used the website but was surprised that not more Parishes were available, so perhaps I should become a member of Find My Past to view all the other parishes? Are they all available?

I have been through FMP with all different combinations of search for a marriage of William and Mary Gibbings, without success. Even out of County. If he did have a different name as Judith suggested, it will be difficult to find. The only thing I did find of possible interest, was a baptism for a Mary Gibbings, illegitimate daughter of Anne, 11.09.1720 Cheldon.
