Researching the Jewells of Knotty Corner, Alwington

Hello,

I am descended on my mother's side from the Jewells of Knotty Corner, Alwington, and I'm trying to work out my Jewell family line as best as I can. However, I'm quite new to family history research and I'm finding it a bit challenging to pin things down once I get earlier than the mid-1800s, and I'm not completely sure that I've got the right people.

If anyone else is researching this family I'd be very pleased to hear from you and perhaps to compare notes, so I can double-check my own conclusions.

Pointers towards sources would also be appreciated. I've just joined DFHS, so hopefully there will be records that I can find here.

I presume the Jewell tree on Ancestry by Mark Posen is you? As to the marriage of John Jewell (1825) to a Mary Glover, there is one on 03.04.1852. at Appledore, Northam. John's father is also John, a Mason. Witness is a Thomas Jewell, brother of John jnr? John (1825) appears to remarry after death of Mary in 1882. Marries in 1884 in Bideford, a Caroline Shute, widow.

If you are a member of the Devon FHS, try Members area, Search Records. Baptism of John Jewell 1825 comes up. You might find other info as well, including marriage of John Jewell Snr marrying Mary Cole. The marriage record for John Jnr is on Find My Past web site, if you have access to that.
On Ancestry site, there is photo of gravestone for John Jnr died 1916, Alwington. (Age 2 years out) He is buried with first wife Mary and second wife Caroline. Registration of his death in 1916 Bideford, gives his age as 84 not 90!

Hi Sally, many thanks for your reply. Yes, that’s my tree on Ancestry. I have John Jewell as born 1929 in my tree. The 1851, 61, 71 and 81 census returns all give inconsistent birth years ranging between 1826 and 1829. I just took the most recent one. Do you have any other source for his birth date?
Thanks for the tip on his wedding date. I had also been given that date by somebody else, but had not updated the date in my tree, which I’ve now done. I’ve found what I believe to be the register entry for that marriage, but I can’t find any online source for the specific date and details which you’ve given. If you have something, maybe you can point me at it please?
I really appreciate your help. Any more guidance regarding the Knotty Corner Jewells will be much appreciated.
